Collaboration: Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution and Hawaii Innovative Knowledge Institute

Program: Youth Peace Symposium based at Pearl Harbor National Memorial Theaters


Goal: Virtual peace discussion between Hawaii and Japan youth focused on the path towards reconciliation between two nations, peace initiatives within the community and our world.

Accomplishments:

  • Local high school and middle school students presented their research and interpretation of a chosen exhibit through a virtual guided tour at Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Historical research also connected to the reconciliation between two nations.

  • Local university students shared their peace initiative that were implemented in their community.

  • Nagasaki University students presented their comparison of visitor experience at Pearl Harbor National Memorial and the Nagasaki Peace Museum.

  • Hawaii and Nagasaki youth representatives participated in a peace panel discussion using questions generated from Hawaii and Japan youth.

Testimony:

I learned that peace begins with me. When peace is within me, I can share the message with my community and the world though my actions and perspective. It was an amazing experience to be a part of a peace discussion with students from Japan. This was a once in a lifetime experience I will never forget (Middle school participant)
